Getting a mobile phone is as difficult as you might think

May be my age is finally caching up with me but I think getting a new phone mobile phone is not an easy task any more.  There are hundreds of plans out there and with all the complexities of comparing included values in the plans, you want to give up and just settle for a cheaper plan. According to a very helpful ACCC page on mobile phones, allowances for a plan can be misleading because they can’t be compared against each other. There are many factors that need to be accounted for such as ‘call rates’ and ‘flag fall’ rates. You also need to see which operating system you are going to prefer (such a s Android or iOs).

For me, I had to have an iPhone because my grandson’s school has an app on iPhone and it’s so much easier to find all the newsletters and school communication on iPhone app rather having to keep track of all those musicals and sports days.

Next I wanted to find a plan which was not on a contract. I hate contracts like every other Australian senior and hence I started my search for a contract free phone plan. For the phone itself, I found a good deal at eBay for a brand new but an older version of iPhone as I don’t mind using an older version as long as it’s not one of those really heavy phone.

From searching on Internet, I zeroed in on 2 companies. Vaya Mobile and Amaysim, both offering contract free phones.  Since I spend a lot of time away from home, I was particularly interested in 4G and eventually settled for $18 plan which made all the sense for my needs. I have already received my SIM but yet to receive the phone from eBay and only then I will be able to know about the call quality but I am hoping that it would be atleast as good as my Vodafone plan.
